SINGAPORE — Following a year-long pilot, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) will now make roadshows aimed at helping flat-owners settle in their new homes a permanent fixture in all Build-To-Order (BTO) projects.

Called the MyNiceHome Roadshow, the initiative was introduced last September for new homeowners.

It provides them with an opportunity to meet their future neighbours as well as pick up renovation tips and advice on home maintenance prior to moving into their flats. They also get to learn more about their new estate.

So far, there have been 24 roadshows, attended by 27,100 homeowners.

The latest was held Sunday (Aug 27) for homeowners of West Crest @ Bukit Batok, and for the first time, it included a Heartland Familiarisation Bus Tour.

From now on, new homeowners can register for these bus tours on a first come, first served basis.

During the tour, they will be guided and told where the key facilities are within their estate.

West Crest @ Bukit Batok was launched for sale in May 2014, and includes three residential blocks with 495 units of two-room, four-room and five-room flats.

When it is completed by year end, homeowners can look forward to a range of amenities, such as a cafeteria and an education centre housed in a commercial block that is part of the development.

Another 10 roadshows are expected to be held this year. They are co-organised by the People’s Association and its grassroots organisations and are usually held about three to six months before the completion of a BTO development.

The HDB said homeowners who have attended the roadshows found the session useful in helping them to settle in their new living environment.

For example, seven in 10 said they picked up home design and renovation advice to prepare for their move, while eight in 10 found that the roadshows gave them a better idea of the amenities and transport network in their estate.

“Overall, the roadshows have helped to familiarise flat owners with their new homes and neighbourhood, while strengthening neighbourly ties from the onset,” said the HDB.

Speaking to reporters Sunday, Member of Parliament (Hong Kah North) Amy Khor said the roadshow has allowed homeowners to look at the floor plan of their unit, among other things.

“To actually see the visual of the completed unit, (and) how it looks like ... also helps them in deciding on (the) decor for the flat and renovation,” said Dr Khor, who is also Senior Minister of State (Environment and Water Resources and Health).

She has attended two roadshows previously and said they have been popular.

On the new bus tour, she said there was feedback from homeowners who wanted to discover the amenities in their estate.

“It’s a very good idea to actually bring them on site and see for themselves,” she added.

One such homeowner is customer service executive Amy Tay, who joined the tour in Bukit Batok on Sunday. Mdm Tay, 35, who has three children aged two to five and now lives in the Chai Chee area, said she wanted to know the surroundings of her estate better.

Accounts executive Sarah Liu, 28, who lives in Dover, said that besides attending the roadshow to learn more about her new estate, she joined the bus tour to find out where the eating places are.
