Helping the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan

SINGAPORE — Several organisations in Singapore are raising funds for those affected by the deadly Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

SINGAPORE — Several organisations in Singapore are raising funds for those affected by the deadly Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

The super typhoon, which barrelled across Philippines last Friday (Nov 8), has devastated cities, towns and fishing villages, bringing about heavy loss of life. Thousands have died and some 660,000 have been displaced.

How you can help:

SINGAPORE RED CROSS SOCIETY

The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) has on Nov 11 committed emergency relief supplies worth S$100,000 for the survivors’ immediate needs. A team of SRC volunteers and staff will leave for the affected areas at Visayas on Nov 14 to help with the distribution of relief items. The SRC is working closely with the Philippine Red Cross to dispatch medical teams to the affected areas in the coming weeks.

To donate:

• Cash donations personally presented at the Red Cross House at 15 Penang Lane Singapore 238486, from 9am to 7pm (Mon-Fri) and 9am to noon (Sat-Sun)

• Cheque crossed to ‘Singapore Red Cross Society’ at the above address. Indicate ‘Red Cross Haiyan Relief’ on the back of the cheque, along with your name, contact number and address. In-kind donations (food, clothes, etc) are not accepted due to logistical considerations.

• Volunteers are also needed to man its hotlines and fund collection booths. To register, call: 6664 0500

• DBS and POSB customers can contribute to the “Red Cross-Haiyan Relief 2013” fund via any of the 1,100 DBS/POSB ATMs located islandwide. They can also contribute via DBS Internet and mobile banking channels from 1pm tomorrow. The “Red Cross-Haiyan Relief 2013” fund has been included as a billing organisation under the Bill Payment service.

MERCY RELIEF

Mercy Relief has deployed its second response team to the areas affected by Typhoon Haiyan. The three-man team will be assessing ground zero in Tacloban City, in Leyte province and other affected areas within the Visayas region, to address the critical needs of the survivors such as water, food and shelter.

Mercy Relief will deploy its manually-powered water filtration systems and procure S$30,000 worth of supplies such as food supplies and blankets/tarpaulins from nearby unaffected areas within the Philippines.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Habitat for Humanity staff are on the ground assessing the situation and coordinating with government agencies and other partners on the disaster response operations. The organisation’s country office in the Philippines is raising funds to distribute 30,000 Shelter Repair Kits for home repairs and 50,000 clean up kits to families affected by the disaster. A Shelter Repair Kit comprises: plywood, lumber, corrugated GI Sheets, sets of nails, hammer, handsaw and screwdriver. Each Habitat for Humanity Shelter Repair Kit costs 15,000 pesos (S$430) and is good for one family.

The boxes will be marked “Singapore Muslim Community’s Special Collection for Typhoon Victims in the Philippines” and all proceeds from the collection will be donated to Mercy Relief. To donate: • Cash donations personally presented at the Muis Building at the Singapore Islamic Hub, 273, Braddell Road Singapore 579702 from 8.30am to 5pm (Mon-Fri only) Note: Office is closed from 12.30pm – 1.30pm on Fridays. • Cheque crossed to “RLAF” with the words “Humanitarian Relief Effort for Victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines” written on the back. The address is as stated above. CITIZEN’S DISASTER RESPONSE CENTER (CDRC) The Citizens’ Disaster Response Center (CDRC) has started an Indiegogo campaign looking for cash donations. A US$10 (S$12.50) donation will help provide rice to a family of six for three days, a US$25 donation will provide food and water to a displaced family for three days, a US$50 donation will provide sleeping mats and blankets to four storm survivors and a US$100 will provide a sleeping kit, hygiene kit and several days of food and water to two families. • To donate, visit: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/help-survivors-of-typhoon-haiyan WORLD VISION World Vision aims to raise US$20 million (S$25 million). World Vision's ground staff are also conducting assessments in the affected areas. The organisation is able to build up its capacity to respond promptly to disasters or crises with its Disaster Response Fund, and they also aim to deliver the necessary aid within 72 hours to the victims.
