HPB pushes for more 500-calorie meals

SINGAPORE — To help residents eat healthier, the Health Promotion Board (HPB) has partnered food service providers such that 700 outlets and stalls will serve 500-calorie meals.

This is part of the HPB’s food strategy under its Healthy Living Master Plan to provide Singaporeans with at least three healthy living options near their home, office and schools by 2020.

Associate Professor Faishal Ibrahim, Parliamentary Secretary for Health, who announced the programme today (June 4), cited the National Nutrition Survey 2010, saying that 60 per cent of Singaporeans eat out at least four times a week and consume meals containing 700-800 calories. Someone who eats out thrice a day could easily exceed his recommended daily energy intake.

The Healthier Dining Programme thus aims to make 500-calorie meals more accessible to Singaporeans.

Half of the outlets who have partnered HPB under the Healthier Dining Programme have also committed to using healthier ingredients, namely healthier oils and/or whole grains.

The HPB plans to increase its number of partners to 30 by year end, and increase the number of available healthier eat-out meals to 180 million meals per year, or 20 per cent of all eat-out meals by 2020.
