SINGAPORE — IKEA is recalling a children’s swing after reports show that the swing could cause serious injury.

Customers have been urged to “immediately remove” the GUNGGUNG swing from children and bring it back to an IKEA store where they will receive a full refund.

IKEA said it received reports of incidents showing that the suspension fittings on the GUNGGUNG swing do not live up to the Swedish retailer’s quality requirements and pose a “risk of serious injury” for children.

There have been no reports of injury in Singapore, but globally four incidents of the suspension fittings breaking were reported, of which two incidents in Austria resulted in injury — On Aug 5, an 8-year-old boy suffered from leg fractures after the buckle in the suspension broke, while another incident involving a four-year-old boy took place on Sept 3 and investigations are underway.

A total of 87 sets of the swing have been sold in Singapore since April 1, and sales were stopped last month while investigations were being conducted, said IKEA, in response to queries.

“Our mindset at IKEA is that we only sell products that we would give to our own children,” Ms Cindy Anderson, Business Area Manager for children’s products at IKEA, said. “However, sometimes even though we have tested according to applicable standards and legislation, we make mistakes. We are therefore recalling the GUNGGUNG swing to avoid any more incidents.”

Customers are not required to provide proof of purchase for the refund. For more information, contact IKEA Customer Relations at +65 6786 6868.
