SINGAPORE – While air quality remained in the unhealthy range this morning (Oct 4), the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) showed some improvement, entering the moderate range later in the afternoon.

At 10pm, the 24-hour PSI was at 78-90. This was down from the 1am reading of 144-178.

The three-hour PSI fell in the early morning but started inching up from 6am. It was at 113 at 10pm.

The haze in Singapore improved overnight due to a shift in the prevailing winds to blow from the south-east, said the National Environment Agency (NEA) in an 11am update.

In a 6pm update, the NEA forecast that the 24-hr PSI for the next 24 hours would be in the high end of the moderate range and the low end of the unhealthy range. The NEA however added that the 24-hr PSI may enter the mid-section of the Unhealthy range if denser haze is blown in.

The NEA advised healthy persons to reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion. The elderly, pregnant women and children should minimise prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion, while those with chronic lung or heart disease should avoid prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion. Persons who are not feeling well, especially the elderly and children, and those with chronic heart or lung conditions, should seek medical attention.
