Jewel Changi Airport to open in first half of 2019; project 70 per cent complete

SINGAPORE — Construction on Jewel Changi Airport is about 70 per cent complete, and the sprawling complex is set to open in the first half of next year, airport operator Changi Airport Group (CAG) said on Tuesday (Feb 6).

The S$1.7 billion development, which began construction more than three years ago, will feature a distinctive dome-shaped glass-and-steel facade. It will have a slew of facilities under one roof, including indoor gardens, retail and dining options, and the world’s tallest indoor waterfall.

Among the attractions at the mixed-use project are the walking and bouncing sky nets that will allow visitors to stroll around in mid-air. Visitors will get panoramic views of the 134,000 sq m complex’s interior from the bouncing net, which is suspended about 30m above the first level at its highest point.

Visitors at the Singapore Airshow, which will runs till Sunday (Feb 11), can get a chance to experience the sky net at the CAG’s booth as a 20m-long, 8m-wide replica — one-tenth the size of the attraction — has been set up there. Previews of upcoming attractions at Jewel also feature in a model of the complex.

The Jewel’s chief attractions include the Rain Vortex, a 40m-high waterfall cascading from its facade to Basement 2, a five-storey Forest Valley that will be home to thousands of plants, trees, ferns and shrubs, and a Canopy Park featuring gardens and walking trails.

Linked to Changi Airport Terminal 1’s arrival hall and to Terminals 2 and 3 via pedestrian bridges, it will house 90,000 sq m of retail space comprising about 300 tenants.

When asked on Tuesday if all its retail space had been taken up, a spokesperson for Jewel Changi Airport Development declined to comment, and added that details of its tenant mix would be shared at a later time.
