SINGAPORE — To encourage more children to start reading from a young age, the Jurong Regional Library has set aside a special corner for the little ones, called the Early Literacy Library.

Located at the basement of the Jurong Regional Library, children aged six and below can have access to around 60,000 books and audio-visual materials.

Minister of State for Education and Communications and Information Sim Ann launched the The Early Literacy Library today (April 10). The Early Literacy Library focuses on five key areas — playing, talking, singing, reading and writing — which are vital to a child’s learning and development. Apart from printed books, interactive storybooks are also available at the library’s Digital Storytelling Kiosks.

The library has a dedicated area for toddlers, aged three and below, where parents will be guided through special programmes on interacting with their children through simple songs, action rhymes and finger plays.

A series of workshops will also be held at the Early Literacy Library and selected public libraries to teach parents and pre-school educators how to guide the young ones to read.

Parents and pre-school educators can pick up tips on identifying what would best interest the children, selecting suitable books for the young ones and creating a nurturing reading environment at home and in school.

“It is my hope and the National Library Board’s hope that spaces like this will encourage more children to start reading from a younger age,” said Ms Sim. “It is a fun activity, it is fantastic for parent-child bonding. More importantly, it is really a very fun-filled activity and I think reading early helps our children prepare for learning and prepare for life.” CHANNEL NEWSASIA
