SINGAPORE — Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong could be the anchor Minister for the People's Action Party (PAP) in Marsiling-Yew Tee Group Representation Constituency (GRC), after he revealed to the media tonight (Aug 1) that he will be contesting in the newly-formed GRC.

"I am very happy to announce I'll be contesting in this new GRC of Marsiling-Yew Tee," Mr Wong, who is currently Member of Parliament for West Coast GRC, told reporters on the sidelines of the National Day Dinner organised for Woodgrove residents today.

"The past four years have been wonderful for me in Boon Lay and I want to thank all the residents of Boon Lay for their friendship and also for the guidance they have given me over these past four years," he said, referring to his ward in West Coast GRC.

"Now I'm in Marsiling-Yew Tee, a new area, so what's important for me now is to spend time here, get to know the residents, get to understand all of them, their families, their concerns and their aspirations," he added.  The remaining candidates to be fielded for the new GRC will only be finalised and announced later in August, he said.

In the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee's report released last week, Marsiling-Yew Tee became a newly formed four-member GRC while West Coast GRC was downsized from a five to four-member GRC.

Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC consists of Marsiling and Woodgrove wards previously under Sembawang GRC as well as the Yew Tee ward which was part of Chua Chu Kang GRC.

While Mr Wong noted that the new GRC is made up of different divisions from two other GRCs, he said that is "not uncommon".

"For now, we take the boundaries as a given and we work with what we have. Like I said I woudn’t want to talk about specific plans yet because it's very early days so my priority now is to spend time on the ground interacting with the residents," he said, adding that he will be spending the next few weeks with the existing MPs and walking the ground.

He also noted that the party will not be starting from "ground zero" as there are strong teams from the PAP in the Marsiling, Woodgrove and Yew Tee wards that have been serving the residents over the past few years.

MP for Sembawang GRC Ong Teng Koon, who oversees the Woodgrove ward, said he hopes to continue serving his residents and be given a chance to stand for the area with Mr Wong, whom he describes as a "very popular minister".
