SINGAPORE — Pink Dot SG, the annual rally to support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights, had its annual light-up tonight (Jun 13).

It was a sea of pink as supporters turn out in full force at the event’s seventh year at Hong Lim Park, and organisers said they had the largest turnout ever with some 28,000 people.

In a news conference earlier in the day, organisers said the growing numbers point to a more accepting Singapore. Plans to expand the event are also in the works, but only if they are able to find a larger venue.

Organisers say this year also marked a record number of sponsors but declined to reveal the event’s total sponsorship. They say that with local entertainment giant Cathay Organistation coming on board, they are hopeful more local companies will declare their support next year.

Pink Dot has also travelled beyond Singapore’s shores. Last week, Taipei held its first ever Pink Dot. Others holding their versions of Pink Dot annually are Hong Kong, and Okinawa in Japan. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
