Meet Alice Lok, the girl who is constantly pushing her personal boundaries.
She took up a Diploma in Communication and Information Design (now known as the Diploma in Mass Communication) at Republic Polytechnic to go beyond her comfort zone and improve her interpersonal skills.
After her graduation, Alice worked as a hotel operations specialist. But 18 months into her job, she resigned to pursue a 16-month degree in international hospitality and tourism management, awarded by Northumbria University, United Kingdom (UK), at Kaplan.
“Kaplan has partnerships with various overseas universities, allowing students to obtain an overseas degree without having to travel out of the country. Students also have the option of completing part of their studies in the home university overseas,” said Alice.
Having started her studies last September, the 23-year-old shares more about her decision.
Why go back to school now?
I wanted to enhance my educational qualifications, and develop my critical thinking, interpersonal communications and decision-making skills. Northumbria University’s programme helps students understand management challenges and prepares them for managerial posts in the hospitality and tourism industries.
The university is also only one of 186 institutions worldwide to receive the prestigious double Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business accreditation in business and accounting programmes.
What is it like studying in Kaplan?
The curriculum is evenly paced with two modules per trimester to help us stay focused. It is also assignment-based with group projects and presentations.
Lectures are lively with discussions and debate sessions where we are pushed to think critically.
What are your plans after graduation next May?
I hope to advance my career in the hospitality and tourism industry. I believe that the skills I’ve picked up will aid me in my goal of becoming a banquet manager.
