SINGAPORE — Year-long measures to ensure security and public order will take effect in Little India tomorrow (April 1), the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced today.

The ministry said the Public Order (Additional Temporary Measures) Act, which provides for a limited an focused set of powers to support current security, traffic management and alcohol restriction measures, will come into force in the same area that was proclaimed under the Public Order (Preservation) Act earlier, and will be now called a “special zone”.

In addition, indoor meetings organised in this “special zone” will now require a Police permit.

MHA says new year-long measures will give sufficient time for the Government to deliberate on and implement longer-term measures, taking into account the findings and recommendations of the Committee of Inquiry into the riot, and the review of the liquor licensing regime.
