SINGAPORE -Residents of MacPherson can look forward to an upgraded community club (CC), which boasts more family-friendly programmes. After 19 months of renovations, the club was officially re-opened by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Saturday (Aug 23) evening.

Mr Lee also thanked the constituency’s pioneers and grassroots leaders, especially MP for Marine Parade GRC Tin Pei Ling for her good work.

Mr Lee said: “MacPherson is one of the oldest constituencies but I sent my youngest candidate here in the election because I was confident she would be able to establish a rapport with the older aunties and uncles and serve them well. And not everyone was confident of that in the beginning, but I was sure she would make it and I think in the last three years, she has shown that the aunties and uncles understand her, support her and know that she is working well for them.

“I watched her speech just now on stage. I think she has come a very long way. So we have new CCs, I think our constituency has been upgraded, we have new facilities, there is a library, the park, your HDB flats, they are upgraded.

“We have come a long way in 50 years but I think that we have a long path ahead of us - a bright and shining future because we are ready, we are prepared. We have the team together and if we work together I am quite sure the next 50 years will be exciting years for ourselves, for our children and for our grandchildren.”

Later, Mr Lee, Ms Tin and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong officially opened the new Community Club during its National Day Dinner for residents. Other than a bright, colourful facade, the upgraded community club has facilities such as a gym, sheltered basketball court and a children’s reading room.

The club will also provide residents with more diversified programmes to attract families and youths. The elderly can also look forward to a new enhanced wellness programme. In addition, there is a new art gallery which features the story of MacPherson through paintings. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
