SINGAPORE – A 57-year-old man was arrested for using criminal force against a National Environment Agency (NEA) enforcement officer after he was stopped by officers for smoking in a prohibited area.

The man refused to provide his particulars to four NEA enforcement officers on duty, who had spotted him smoking under a covered walkway at Woodlands Centre Road on Aug 8.

He also forcefully grabbed the arm of one of the officers and deterred him from discharging his duty, said the police in a press release on Monday (Aug 14).

The man was arrested on the scene that day after the police were alerted. Police investigations are ongoing.

Any individual convicted of using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty can be jailed up to four years, or fined, or both.
