SINGAPORE — A 30-year-old man was charged in court on Thursday (Jan 12) with driving dangerously against the flow of traffic on an expressway in the wee hours of Jan 5.

Brandon Ng, an engineer, allegedly drove his red BMW coupe in the wrong direction on the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) towards Tuas around 1.30am. He was arrested near Jubilee Road in West Coast around 6pm on Jan 6. The court was not told how he was identified or tracked down.

Ng, who appeared in court in a blue polo T-shirt, faces up to one year in jail, a fine not exceeding S$3,000, or both punishments, if he is convicted of dangerous driving.

He is also under investigation for drink driving for the same incident.

No plea was taken on Thursday but defence lawyer Luke Lee told the judge his client has Asperger’s syndrome and a history of depression. Asperger’s is a form of autism that causes repetitive behaviour and difficulty with social interactions.

“He’s been seeing a doctor for half his life,” Mr Lee told reporters after the hearing.

He added that he was representing Ng for the fourth time. The lawyer declined to give more details on the past cases, except to say they were not traffic-related matters and the last time he acted for Ng was six years ago.

Ng was released on S$10,000 bail and will return to court on Feb 16.

His is one of seven such incidents in less than three weeks the police are investigating.

The Traffic Police said at a press conference on Wednesday that since Dec 28 last year, they have received seven reports of motorists driving against the flow of traffic.

They also reassured the public that most of the incidents were accidental and unintentional, and said the spate of such reported cases could be due to greater awareness following the fatal Dec 19 accident along the AYE.

In that case, Lim Chai Heng, 53, has been charged for driving his silver Mercedes Benz against traffic at high speed, also on the AYE. A motorist died and several other people were seriously injured in the incident.

Lim was initially charged with causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. But the Attorney-General’s Chambers subsequently amended the charge to that of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Lim is currently remanded for psychiatric evaluation at Complex Medical Centre in Changi Prison. He will return to court on Jan 24.
