SINGAPORE — A 33-year-old Malaysian was yesterday charged with attempting to enter Singapore without a valid pass, becoming the fourth this year to be hauled to court for trying to evade immigration clearance at the Woodlands Checkpoint.

Mohd Sani Mohamad Salleh was arrested at the checkpoint on Monday after he tried to drive off when officers directed him to go for further checks because he was unable to produce his travel document. The alarm was activated, triggering a lockdown of the arrival car zone.

Sani has been remanded at the Institute of Mental Health pending psychiatric assessment.

His case will be mentioned again on May 7. If convicted, he faces up to six months’ jail and at least three strokes of the cane.

On Tuesday, Malaysian poultry seller Koh Chin Had, 42, became the first to be sentenced of the four charged with attempts to evade immigration clearance this year.

He was sentenced to a higher-than-usual eight weeks’ jail, as the judge said a strong signal had to be sent that such offences are taken seriously by the authorities following the flurry of such incidents this year.
