Man jailed 30 months for molesting 13-year-old boy

SINGAPORE — A 33-year-old man who molested a 13-year-old boy has been sentenced to 30 months’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane.

Paul Tan Weixiang had groped the boy in late March last year at a hut at Jurong West Street 42 after 9pm. The offence took place while Tan was on a 12-month conditional warning period for molesting another boy in April 2012.

The former safety supervisor had fondled a 14-year-old boy’s lower body at Jurong West Avenue 1 in 2012.

Tan came to know the two boys through basketball and would then try to get close to the young boys and molest them.

Tan was also fined S$3,000 for possessing three obscene films in his mobile phone, which was discovered in April last year during his arrest.

The court heard that Tan has associated himself with young male boys aged between 14 and 20 for the past decade. He would shower them with gifts in order to get the boys to spend more time with him.

In pleading for leniency, his lawyer told the court Tan had been plagued with a condition, had sought treatment from a psychiatrist and never missed a single session.

But the defence said Tan failed to control his “demons”.

In sentencing him, District Judge Low Wee Ping wished Tan well in his fight against his condition. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
