SINGAPORE — A spirited discussion about Arsenal’s defeat in a football match last December at a coffee shop turned ugly for three Manchester City fans, when their conversation sparked off an attack by another group of men.

The incident saw Lim Leng Hwee, 38, attacking Mr Roger Lian Yong Hong, 32, with a metal pole and hitting him once on the top of the head, leaving Mr Lian with a cut on his forehead and swelling at the back of his head.

For this, Lim was yesterday fined S$4,000 by the district court.

He had pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt and causing mischief by peeling off the padded flooring of his cell while he was in remand over the attack.

The court heard that on the night of Dec 14 last year, Mr Lian was watching a football match between Arsenal and Manchester City with two friends at a coffee shop in Ang Mo Kio.

Later, they were confronted by a man — whose identity remains unknown — who demanded to know why they were speaking so loudly. He also told them that they were on his “operational ground”.

The man was then joined by several other men, among whom was Lim, and a fight ensued.

Mr Lian’s two friends were also assaulted in the process. The three were later taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital at 1.33am.

For voluntarily causing hurt, Lim could have been jailed for up to two years, fined up to S$5,000, or both. AMANDA LEE
