SINGAPORE — The Maserati driver accused of injuring a Traffic Police officer in a hit-and-run incident two weeks ago was hit with six fresh charges on Friday (Dec 1).

Lee Cheng Yan, 33, now faces three new charges under the Protection from Harassment Act, one charge each for cheating and driving without insurance, as well as a second count of driving under disqualification.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Quek Jing Feng told the court that this is not the final set of charges brought against Lee, because investigations are still ongoing.

Previously, it was reported that Lee was being probed over unlicensed moneylending and illegal online gambling.

In the latest set of charges, he is said to have harassed two men by sending them threatening phone text messages.

He allegedly sent one message to the first man on May 22, threatening to splash paint on his house door if he did not “pay up” an unspecified amount of money.

On July 22, he is said to have sent a similar message to the same person, saying his house would “catch fire”, among other things.

To the second man, Lee allegedly sent a message on June 12 saying that he would “disturb” the man’s family.

On July 6, two days after he was disqualified from holding or obtaining a driver’s licence for nine months, Lee allegedly duped a car rental firm’s employee into believing that he had a valid licence.

The employee then rented him a car for 29 days. Court documents did not show the make of the rented car. Less than a month later on Aug 4, he is said to have driven the car along Shaw Road near Upper Paya Lebar Road while still under the driving ban, which is believed to be at least his third ban.

While under disqualification, Lee also drove his white Maserati and allegedly hit a Traffic Police officer when he was being stopped for enforcement checks along Bedok Reservoir Road on the night of Nov 17.

He purportedly reversed and accelerated his car into Staff Sergeant (SSgt) Khairulanwar Abd Kahar, who was warded in hospital with serious injuries but later discharged.

Lee was arrested at a public housing flat on Geylang Bahru Road. His Maserati was found abandoned on Cedar Avenue, off Upper Aljunied Road.

For driving without motor insurance, he could be fined up to S$1,000, jailed up to three months, and banned from driving for 12 months.

For a repeat conviction of driving under disqualification, Lee could face enhanced penalties, including a fine of between S$3,000 and S$10,000, jail of up to 12 months, as well as disqualification from driving for at least 12 months.

If convicted of causing grievous hurt to SSgt Khairulanwar through a rash act, he faces up to four years’ jail and/or a fine of up to S$10,000.

On Friday, Lee was offered bail of S$20,000. He will return to court on Dec 28.
