SINGAPORE — Temperature checks at Singapore’s Changi Airport began today (May 18) for passengers arriving from the Middle East.

The move is a pre-emptive measure by the Ministry of Health to facilitate early detection of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), and travellers found to have a fever will be referred to a designated area for further clinical assessment.

Some 50,000 people arrive at Changi Airport from the Middle East every month.

This morning, some 40 passengers from Singapore going on a mini-pilgrimage to Mecca took precautionary measures.

“We have taken our two injections and we will also take care of our hygiene matters. We have also taken some Vitamin C and will take care of what we eat and of course, our surrounding as well,” a pilgrim said. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
