SINGAPORE – The Boys’ Brigade’s Share-A-Gift project, into its 30th edition, will benefit a record of over 42,000 individuals this year, including about 9,400 who have made specific wishes for items such as schoolbags or household appliances.

In a reflection of an ageing population, two in three of those with specific wishes are seniors who have asked for items such as blankets, adult diapers, fans and rice cookers. The 6,310 seniors with specific wishes this year is 25 per cent higher than the number three years ago.

The Boys’ Brigade will begin its collection for Share-A-Gift later this month and the gifts and food hampers will be delivered from Dec 4 to 29.

But some, such as Fei Yue Senior Activity Centre attendee Abu Hassan Jawahir, 60, have received their gifts early.

Mr Hassan, who had asked for a mini radio, said: “I enjoy listening to music, with this mini radio set I am able to listen to my favourite radio channel.”

Compared to last year, the number of children and families making specific wishes this year is lower – by 14 and 4 per cent, respectively. Besides seniors, 1,695 children, 750 people with special needs and 641 families - all with gross monthly household income of up to S$1,700 - have made specific wishes this year.

The bulk of Share-A-Gift beneficiaries will receive hampers with 25 essential household items and food including rice, biscuits and canned food. Each hamper could last a beneficiary about four months, the Boys’ Brigade said in a press release on Friday (Nov 3). The 32,900 hamper recipients are those on government social assistance schemes and who are served by voluntary welfare organisations.

Mr Lui Chong Chee, chairman of this year’s Share-A-Gift, said: “(The Boys’ Brigade Share-A-Gift project) is possible due to the generous contributions by members of the public who are involved by adopting wishes, donating gifts and delivering food hampers.

“We are grateful for the continuous support from Singaporeans for the past three decades, and we look forward to working hand in hand to bring festive joy to the beneficiaries once again.”

Members of the public who are keen to fulfill specific wishes may look them up at six NTUC FairPrice outlets at AMK Hub, Jurong Point, Nex mall, Singapore Sports Hub, Jem mall and Warehouse Club.

They may donate food and household items for the hampers at the six locations, as well as six other FairPrice outlets – Bukit Timah Plaza, Junction 8, Thomson Plaza, Bedok Mall, Tampines Mall, and Toa Payoh HDB Hub – between 11am and 9pm daily.

Donors can also contribute by buying hampers valued at S$20, S$30 and S$50 via FairPrice’s website or donating cash at AXS stations islandwide.
