More could have been done for MCE opening: LTA

SINGAPORE — The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has acknowledged that more could have been done in terms of signs to prepare motorists and reduce traffic congestion on the Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) on the morning of Dec 30 — the first working day after it was opened.

In a briefing this afternoon (Jan 15), the LTA said that traffic conditions on the road network have been smooth over the past two weeks, with peak hour traffic volumes on the MCE and East Coast Parkway returning to the levels prior to the MCE’s opening.

Since the MCE’s opening, the authority has more than doubled the number of temporary signages in the area, while broadcasting the routes and exits motorists can take when using the MCE to reach destinations on their Expressway and Monitoring Advisory Systems.

Based on the LTA’s review, motorists’ lack of familiarity with the new expressway and the interim network in the Marina South area contributed to the congestion on Dec 30.

Addressing misconceptions that the MCE has design deficiencies, the LTA’s deputy chief executive for infrastructure & development Chua Chong Kheng said that comprehensive planning and traffic studies were conducted before the expressway was designed and constructed, with external consultants were engaged to validate these findings.

“Moving ahead, LTA will draw on the lessons learned from December 30 traffic congestion for future road openings,” said Mr Chua.
