More rainy days expected in second half of June, but temperatures can still hit 35°C

SINGAPORE — More rainy days are expected in the second half of this month as compared to the first two weeks, but the daily maximum temperature could still reach a high of around 35°C on a few days, said the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) on Friday (June 16).

SINGAPORE — More rainy days are expected in the second half of this month as compared to the first two weeks, but the daily maximum temperature could still reach a high of around 35°C on a few days, said the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) on Friday (June 16).

In its fortnightly update, the weatherman said there could be six to eight days of short-duration thundery showers over the next two weeks, mostly during the late morning and afternoon hours. On one or two days, widespread thunder showers with occasional gusty winds are also expected due to the passage of a Sumatra squall.

Still, the daily temperature is forecast to range between 25°C and 34°C on most days, reaching up to 35°C on a few days.

The highest daily maximum temperature in the first two weeks of June was recorded at Chua Chu Kang on June 5. The temperature hit 34.9°C on that day. The met service said that that mean temperature recorded at the Changi climate station in the first half of June was 29.1°C, approximately 0.8°C warmer than the long-term mean temperature for June.

Warm nights were recorded due to warm and humid air over the sea being blown towards land by the prevailing winds, the agency said.

Most parts of Singapore received below-normal rainfall in the first half of June. The lowest rainfall of 8.6mm (87 per cent below average) was recorded around the Changi area. Rainfall was highest around the Chua Chu Kang area where 116.3mm (36 per cent above average) was recorded.
