More support for low-income expectant mothers

SINGAPORE — Expectant mothers from low-income backgrounds can now look forward to a multi-layered and integrated community health and social care support system for their children by Temasek Cares.

SINGAPORE — Expectant mothers from low-income backgrounds can now look forward to a multi-layered and integrated community health and social care support system for their children by Temasek Cares.

Mothers that meet the per capita income requirement of S$650 or less, and are Singapore citizens or permanent residents, are eligible for the Temasek Cares KIDS (Kids Integrated Development Service) 0-3 pilot programme.

The pilot programme, run by Temasek Cares, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) and AMKFSC Community Services, aims to optimise the developmental potential of children with a comprehensive spectrum of care in terms of physical, social, psychological and educational need.

Mothers will also be educated on child health as well as basic child development and care.

Temasek Cares, KKH and AMKFSC are aiming to help 300 vulnerable families in three years. Currently, 23 families are involved in the programme, which began in July this year.

Trained personnel, such as pediatric nurses, social workers and community health visitors, will be appointed to conduct house visits, with responsibilities such as childcare education, psychological evaluations and facilitation of parent-child bonding.

Speaking at a media conference today (Oct 30), Programme Director Professor Chay Oh Moh said: “Our long-term vision is to have children from vulnerable backgrounds to have an equal footing with the others when they go to school, and I hope that this concept will not just be Temasek Cares-driven, but something that will be adopted nationwide.”
