SINGAPORE — Another Indonesian firm has been sent a preventive measures notice by the National Environment Agency (NEA) directing it to take fire-fighting measures, the agency said today (Oct 12) as its issued its haze advisory.

PT Bumi Andalas Permai is the sixth company to be served a notice by the NEA under the Transboundary Haze Pollution Act. The NEA added that they have received a response from one of the five companies they had earlier sent a notice to — PT Bumi Sriwijaya Sentosa — and will be reviewing the information provided.

It has also sought more information from Asia Pulp & Paper Company (APP) in Singapore, while reviewing information provided by APP in response to an earlier request from NEA.

For tomorrow, occasional slight haze and reduction in visibility can be expected, particularly in the morning, if PM2.5 concentration levels are elevated, said the NEA. The 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index for the next 24 hours is expected to be between the high end of the moderate range and the low end of the unhealthy range.

Air quality deteriorated slightly today due to weak prevailing winds blowing haze from the surrounding region, resulting in a slight reduction in visibility in some parts of the island. The NEA said that current conditions are expected to persist as prevailing winds are forecast to continue blowing from the east or southeast.

As at 8pm, the 24-hour PSI readings ranged from 98 to 116 while the three-hour PSI stood at 108.

A total of 125 hotspots were detected in Sumatra today, compared to 129 yesterday. “Moderate to dense haze is still persisting in parts of southern and central Sumatra,” said the NEA.

Given the air quality forecast for the next 24 hours, the NEA advised healthy persons to reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion. The elderly, pregnant women and children should minimise prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion, while those with chronic lung or heart disease should avoid prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion. Persons who are not feeling well, especially the elderly and children, and those with chronic heart or lung conditions, should seek medical attention.
