SINGAPORE — A marker commemorating the struggles of Singaporeans against violence and subversion by the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) was officially unveiled by former President S R Nathan this morning (Dec 8).

The marker — which honours Singaporeans who battled bravely against the violence and intimidation by the CPM between 1948 and 1989 and pays homage to those killed or injured in Singapore and Malaysia as a result of their efforts to bring about a democratic and non-communist Singapore — is situated at Esplanade Park along Queen Elizabeth Walk. It also acknowledges the dedication of Singapore’s police officers who worked to protect fellow citizens during the violent struggle against the CPM.

Mr Nathan had himself witnessed the violence wrought by the CPM and played a part in helping to overcome the hold of pro-communists in the trade unions in the 1960s. He said: “I am pleased to unveil the marker honouring Singaporeans who stood up against the CPM during Singapore’s early years.”

“It is a timely reminder of those who perished and suffered as a result of communist violence. Their fight against the communists was an indispensable part of our nation’s road to independence,” he added.
