SINGAPORE — The journey on foot between Jurong East MRT and Lakeside, where the Singapore Science Centre is located, will be eased thanks to a 270m long pedestrian mall called J Link.

The mall, located between JCube shopping mall and a row of shops at Block 135 Jurong Gateway road was officially opened today (Nov 23).

It will feature wider pathways to ease crowding when accessing surrounding HDB areas, the Jurong East MRT station and Lakeside.

It also has a covered walkway providing a direct connection from JCube and Block 135 to Jurong Regional Library. Previously, pedestrians could only access to the library via dirt tracks on a grass patch.

A statement released by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) said J Link was “designed as a distinctive public space where pedestrians and visitors can enjoy many unique features along its route, take part in community activities or simply gather with their families and friends”.

The public space includes a Canopy — a pavilion with a curved green roof that provides a space for events.

Incorporating universal design in the form of ramps and handrails, the mall is accessible to all visitors.

Other than a children’s playground and art exhibition corner, there is also a heritage corner, created in collaboration between the URA and the National Heritage Board (NHB), where visitors can learn about more about the history of Jurong.

For instance, some of the 12 structures that will be on display pay tribute to Jurong’s role in Singapore’s industrial development, as well as the area’s past as Singapore’s first and only open-air drive-in cinema.

Mr Ng Lang, Chief Executive Officer of the URA said: “J Link enhances the pedestrian’s experience in Jurong Lake District and is a wonderful addition to the area. We are happy that the local community and stakeholders are involved in the planning and design of J Link to make this a meaningful and relevant public space for the community to enjoy.”
