SINGAPORE — A new SG50 commemorative book celebrates 50 years of Singapore’s unique hawker culture.
Called Our Hawker Centres - A Heritage & Art Project, it features photos and write-ups of more than 130 artworks across 44 hawker centres.
The artworks are part of an initiative that started in January. More than 1,500 participants, including students and professional artists, came together to create murals and art installations.
The aim was to raise awareness of the heritage and cultural value of the hawker centres.
Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam presented the books as tokens of appreciation to more than 70 participating schools, organisations and individuals at Taman Jurong Community Club.
The book was jointly published by the National Environment Agency and the National Heritage Board, in partnership with the National Arts Council and Nippon Paint Singapore.
