SINGAPORE — The Hong Kah North constituency is stepping up efforts to encourage residents and workers in the Bukit Batok area to be more eco-friendly, generate less food waste and reduce carbon emissions, Senior Minister of State for the Environment and Water Resources Amy Khor said yesterday.

As part of this campaign launched yesterday, the Hong Kah North Grassroots Organisations will be placing a few “smart bins” in parts of the constituency. When the bins are full, companies and cleaners will be alerted by text messages or email. This helps to save on manpower and reduce cleaners’ carbon footprint, given that the bins are checked only when required.

Recycling bins will also be placed in the Hong Kah North Community Club, Dr Khor said. The Member of Parliament for the constituency also launched the Hong Kah North Eco Community Fund at the event, with a sum of S$23,000 in place to help students develop eco-friendly habits and care more for the environment. Schools in the area will be able to tap the fund if they have proposals for green projects. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
