New website to spur donations, other forms of giving

SINGAPORE — A new website will allow users to set recurring donations, establish goals on how much to give, buy gift coupons for others to donate to charities of their choice and more when it is launched in November.

Giving.sg will replace SG Gives and SG Cares — portals for donations and volunteerism respectively — run by the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre (NVPC). It aims to boost donations and other forms of giving, and is part of the NVPC’s efforts to build a stronger giving community.

Instead of focusing solely on giving one’s time or money, Giving.sg aims to create a more engaging and holistic giving experience, the NVPC said yesterday.

The new site will also enable fundraising campaigns, similar to the Singapore Red Cross Society’s Nepal Relief Efforts, which was set up in the wake of the earthquake last month. Hosted on SG Gives, the campaign has raised more than S$1 million.

Taking advantage of year-end merrymaking, a new week dedicated to giving will take place from Dec 1 to 7.The public can consider pledging part of their bonuses to charities, and non-profits can raise awareness for a cause during this period, the NVPC said. Firms may also get involved by adopting a charity or getting their head honchos to take the lead.

To spur corporate giving, the NVPC will set up a Corporate Giving Advisory Council and a new programme to engage captains of industry. The latter will provide networking sessions on corporate giving, and more details will be released later.

In the area of individual giving, the NVPC hopes to promote skills-based volunteerism and will get human-resource professionals to help non-profits improve engagement of volunteers.

Said NVPC chief executive Melissa Kwee: “Giving can be fun, simple and meaningful ... For Singapore to truly be our best home, we must become a lovable and giving nation, not simply a livable and prosperous city.”

Nominations are now open for the President’s Volunteerism and Philanthropy Awards, which celebrates the efforts of groups and individuals, will be presented in October. NEO CHAI CHIN
