SINGAPORE — A 149kg female baby Asian elephant was born on May 12 (Thursday) at the Night Safari, marking its first elephant birth in six years.

With this birth, the Night Safari is now home to four female and two male elephants.

Born to 30-year-old Sri Nandong, a female Asian elephant, and 39-year-old Chawang, an Asian bull elephant, the calf has since gained 43kg and now weighs 192kg, said Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) on Tuesday.

WRS said keepers were aware of the mother’s pregnancy but did not expect the baby to arrive so soon as an elephant’s gestation period usually lasts between 22 to 24 months.

Visitors can view the baby elephant at the Asian elephant exhibit from late June onwards.
