Nine arrested for loanshark and illegal betting activities

SINGAPORE — The police have arrested seven men and two women aged between 28 and 64 for suspected loanshark and illegal betting activities in a 12-hour island-wide operation that ended on Wednesday (Jan 18).
Cash and cheques amounting to about S$111,000, mobile phones and laptops were seized during the operations.
The suspects are also believed to be involved in illegal betting activities.

SINGAPORE — The police have arrested seven men and two women aged between 28 and 64 for suspected loanshark and illegal betting activities in a 12-hour island-wide operation that ended on Wednesday (Jan 18).


Cash and cheques amounting to about S$111,000, mobile phones and laptops were seized during the operations.
The suspects are also believed to be involved in illegal betting activities.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects are believed to be part of a loansharking syndicate and held various roles in the syndicate, including ‘Ah Longs’ who had issued loans illegally.

Two men aged 46 and 52, will be charged in Court on Thursday for offences under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010). Investigations against the remaining suspects are ongoing.
Police Superintendent Loh Kah Wai advised members of the public to stay away from loansharks and not to work with or assist loansharks in any way.
