Now surfing: Free WiFi service launched at downtown MRT stations

SINGAPORE – An estimated 75,000 commuters at the City Hall, Orchard and Raffles Place MRT stations were among the first to try out a new free WiFi service while waiting for their trains.

SINGAPORE – An estimated 75,000 commuters at the City Hall, Orchard and Raffles Place MRT stations were among the first to try out a new free WiFi service while waiting for their trains.

An extension of the free Wireless@SG service, it offers commuters download speeds of up to 2Mbps. It will be progressively rolled out at the train platforms of all North-East Line stations, as well as 12 other MRT stations with high passenger volume. These include Jurong East, Buona Vista and Paya Lebar stations.

The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore has deployed four roving officers at both City Hall and Orchard Road stations, to spread awareness and assist commuters with setting up the service. However, commuters Channel NewsAsia spoke with at City Hall station were either unaware of the Wi-Fi roll-out, or said they did not want to deal with the hassle. Most said they preferred to use their mobile Internet data.
