SINGAPORE — The three per cent discount for seniors shopping at NTUC FairPrice outlets will be extended for another year to December 31, 2018, the supermarket chain announced on Thursday (Dec 28).

To date, over S$11.5 million has been disbursed under the discount scheme. Citizens who are aged 65 and above in 2014, and who obtained Singapore citizenship on or before Dec 31, 1986 are eligible for the discounts.

This year alone, FairPrice's Pioneer Generation (PG) discount scheme has disbursed more than S$4.5 million. This is an increase of over 40 per cent compared to 2016.

Mr Seah Kian Peng, CEO of NTUC FairPrice said: "The PG discount scheme has been very well received and we remain committed to serving the needs of our pioneers by providing greater savings for them to stretch their dollar further."

"Beyond this, we hope this initiative continues to inspire the community to join us in honouring and showing appreciation to our pioneers for their hard work and dedication in helping to build Singapore to what it is today," he added.

The scheme — which was launched in October 2014 — allows pioneers to get a three per cent discount when they shop at all FairPrice supermarket and hypermarket outlets on Mondays and Thursdays.

PG members also enjoy priority queueing at designated priority payment counters in all FairPrice stores.

The PG discount scheme complements FairPrice's Seniors' Discount Scheme, which entitles all shoppers above the age of 60 to enjoy a two per cent discount on Tuesdays.

It is estimated that there are 450,000 Singaporeans who are considered to be part of the pioneer generation.
