NTUC to launch Centre for Domestic Employees at end-January
SINGAPORE — The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) will be launching a new help centre to “assist all needy or aggrieved domestic workers, whether local or foreign” at the end of January.
SINGAPORE — The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) will be launching a new help centre to “assist all needy or aggrieved domestic workers, whether local or foreign” at the end of January.
In a media statement issued today (Jan 4), NTUC said the new Centre for Domestic Employees or CDE, will be similar to the existing Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC).
“It is our hope that in operating this new CDE, we will be able to reach out to and help even more workers,” said NTUC assistant secretary-general Yeo Guat Kwang, who is also chairman of MWC.
Mr Yeo announced this in a statement following a Straits Times report on an Indonesian domestic helper who has not been paid since October as her employer is in a coma.
“As a Labour Movement, we are sympathetic that the domestic worker concerned has fallen upon hardship as a result of some unfortunate turn of events. We also sympathise with the employer in view of her current health condition,” said Mr Yeo.
“We recognise that the employer had dutifully paid the worker her salary up till the former’s second stroke, and for whom it must be said, did not have the intention to deprive the worker of her salary,” he added.
NTUC has been advertising the employment positions available at the new centre since late December. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
