SINGAPORE — The Department of Architecture at the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) School of Design and Environment (SDE) today (Oct 29) launched a design sourcebook for designing nursing homes for high-rise, high-density Asian cities like Singapore.

The sourcebook, Re-Imagining the Nursing Home in Singapore, is the culmination of a semester-long project by 131 third-year architecture students who developed creative and practical designs after research with local nursing homes.

The book also included eight case studies of nursing homes in Singapore, 58 creative designs and design templates for elderly care facilities.

Students took part in a series of pre-design research activities that consisted of visits to nursing homes and activities that simulated the possible physical difficulties that come with ageing.

Dr Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Mampower graced the book launch.

Associate Professor Wong Yunn Chii, head of the Department of Architecture at NUS’s SDE said, “We hope that the project will promote discussions on the proper planning and designing considerations of our physical spaces that empower our elderly to create a desirable, gentle and healing environment.”
