NUS, NTU move up in QS World University Rankings

SINGAPORE — The National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have each risen by two positions to rank 22nd and 39th, respectively, in the annual Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings.

The results, released today (Sept 16), show that NUS maintained its standing as the best university in Asia for a second year running.

Its Arts and Humanities faculty rose four positions to rank 13th, while the Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and medicine, and Social Sciences and Management faculties retained their places. The Natural Sciences faculty, however, recorded a dip, moving down two spots to 13th place.

Singapore’s oldest university retained its ninth position worldwide for academic reputation and jumped six spots to 10th place for employer reputation.

Moving up 35 places since 2010 to rank 39th, NTU is now one of just two young universities (below 50 years old) among the world’s top 30s.

“The University significantly improved its scores in its reputation among international employers, student faculty ratio, and faculty citations. It also scored top marks for its internationally diverse faculty and student communities,” said NTU.

Its Engineering and Technology faculty recorded its best-ever showing by moving up five spots to ninth place. The Arts and Humanities faculty also improved significantly, jumping 31 places to 86 from 117 last year, while the Social Sciences and Management faculty rose by three positions to rank 33rd.

NTU’s standing with international employers rose by seven places to rank 35th, its highest ever.

Both universities’ presidents responded positively to the results.

NTU President Bertil Andersson said: “Competition within the world’s Top 50 is very stiff so we are very pleased that we have climbed another two spots this year, passing another milestone by breaking into the top 30s. With two Singapore universities high up in the global stakes, I think we all have much to be proud of.”

He added: “The high calibre of our graduates is widely recognised by major employers around the world. NTU graduates are entering today’s global workplace with not only the skills and expertise to meet the needs of employers. Our graduates have also shown that they have a global mindset and are capable of working comfortably across multicultural environments.”

NUS President Tan Chorh Chuan said: “We are happy and honoured that NUS is placed again among the very best universities in the world, and top in Asia.”

“We will continue to innovate in education and research, so that the university will continue to contribute strongly towards the advancement of Singapore and the wider community in the years to come,” he added.

The QS World University Rankings is widely-regarded as one of the leading global university ranking systems. The survey evaluates over 800 universities based on academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, faculty student ratio, and proportions of international students and international faculty.
