SINGAPORE — The meeting between opposition parties to negotiate where each will field candidates for the coming elections has been postponed to Monday (Aug 3) instead, National Solidarity Party’s (NSP) acting secretary-general Hazel Poa said today.
Two opposition parties — Reform Party and the Singapore Democratic Alliance — had earlier called for the meeting, originally scheduled for Friday evening, to be moved, partly because some of their key members were unavailable.
The NSP had called for the meeting following the past weekend, which saw political parties moving swiftly to stake claims on the constituencies they wished to contest.
So far, 12 out of the 29 constituencies to be filled have attracted the attention of more than one contender to the incumbents. Among these, Tampines GRC is being eyed by the most number of parties seeking to dislodge the People’s Action Party. These parties are the NSP, Singaporeans First and People’s Power Party.
The Electoral Boundaries Review Committee made public its report delineating the boundaries of constituencies last Friday, which marks the penultimate step before Parliament can be dissolved for the next General Election that must be held by January 2017.
