SINGAPORE — From dining options at Tung Lok Group’s outlets and McDonald’s, to movie and air tickets, national servicemen will have more than 270 merchants to choose from to spend their S$100 NS50 vouchers, the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) said on Thursday (May 18).

The list of merchants spans the  food and beverage, shopping and lifestyle, IT and telco, travel and leisure industries, as well as the entertainment sector, and the vouchers can be used at over 6,000 outlets.

The vouchers are part of a recognition package to mark 50 years of National Service (NS50), and will be made available to more than one million men who have enlisted for NS since it started in 1967. Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen had said in February that the package was “a small token to thank every national serviceman for their role in defending Singapore”.

The package also includes a one-year complimentary Safra or HomeTeamNS membership for all former and current operationally ready national servicemen (NSmen), and a complimentary five-year PAssion Card membership. Registration for the PAssion Card has to be done separately.

The distribution of the recognition package will be conducted in phases starting from mid-May, Mindef said.

All full-time national servicemen and NSmen, who are existing Safra or HomeTeamNS members, will receive the package by mail.

Non-members will have to wait for notification letters, which will be sent out from late July, before they can go online to register for the package. They have until June next year to do so, and the vouchers are valid for use till Dec 31 next year.

Apart from the recognition package, a slew of activities has been organised to mark the year-long NS50 campaign. Its theme, From My Generation to Yours, is meant to highlight the importance of Singaporeans’ continued support of NS by passing the duty from one generation to the next.

Since April, the People’s Association has been organising appreciation ceremonies to show the community’s recognition and appreciation for NSmen. NS50 Week, to be held from Aug 1 to 10, will feature a series of community engagement events, such as an NS50-themed picnic.

An NS50 dinner reception will be held later in the year, where national servicemen, their families and employers, and companies who have shown strong support for NS over the past 50 years will be recognised.

CORRECTION: In an earlier version of this article, we reported that the package also includes a one-year complimentary Safra or HomeTeamNS membership for all national servicemen. This is inaccurate. It is for all past and present NSmen. We apologise for the error.
