SINGAPORE — Giant pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia were brought into their dens for natural mating on Thursday (March 30), after Jia Jia’s hormonal levels indicated she was ready for mating, said the Wildlife Reserves Singapore in a media statement.
After the attempt at natural mating, an artificial insemination will be carried out to increase Jia Jia’s chances of conceiving.
This will be the third try at natural mating for the giant pandas since 2015. Past natural mating and artificial insemination efforts did not succeed.
Prof Ng Soon Chye, an obstetrics and gynaecology specialist renowned for his expertise in reproductive medicine, will be leading the veterinary team at the River Safari.
From March 31 to April 2, visitors will not be able to see Kai Kai and Jia Jia in their exhibits. The red panda exhibit, however, will still be open to visitors.
