SINGAPORE — The ruling People’s Action Party will set up a new interest group dedicated to ageing issues. Called the PAP Seniors Group, it will work with the PAP Community Foundation to pilot new solutions for eldercare needs and engage senior party activists to mentor younger officers.
It will be chaired by Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong will be advisor, said Prime Minister and party secretary-general Lee Hsien Loong at the PAP Convention today.
A new party resolution outlining ideals like opportunities for all Singaporeans and an open and compassionate meritocracy was adopted at the convention, attended by over 1,000 members at the Kallang Theatre. The party’s broad goals — to build a fair, just and tolerant multi-racial society, for instance — remain unchanged, but the goals must be interpreted for a new phase and new generation, Mr Lee said.
In his speech, Mr Lee also said that in a more contested political environment, the party needs to fight for its beliefs, state clearly what it stands for and “make sure the right result prevails”.
The resolution will guide the next stage of PAP’s journey, he said.
