SINGAPORE — More newcomers from the People’s Action Party (PAP) were unveiled in a press conference today (Aug 15), held to introduce the party’s slate of candidates for three constituencies.

Temasek Polytechnic School of Design deputy director Darryl David, 44, will join the team contesting in the Ang Mo Kio GRC and senior IT manager at IBM Mr Lee Hong Chuang will be fielded at Hougang SMC in the upcoming elections.

The Hougang ward that Mr Lee will be contesting in has long been held by the Workers' Party. The father of two children, aged 10 and 12, is the chairman of the PAP branch in Hougang and has been volunteering for more than 26 years and has chaired and organised events such as the Youth Olympic Games.

ANG MO KIO GRC

Mr David, who is succeeding Mr Yeo Guat Kwang in Ang Mo Kio GRC, has been seen accompanying Mr Yeo in Ang Mo Kio and Hougang. Mr Yeo will be fielded to another constituency which will be revealed on another date.

Mr David began his community work as a district councillor with the North-East Community Development Council (CDC) in 2009. The former TV personality is married with two children aged 4 and 7.

Colorectal surgeon Dr Koh Poh Koon who contested for PAP in the 2013 Punggol East by-elections will join the Ang Mo Kio GRC team in the next general election. He will succeed Mr Seng Han Thong who is stepping down after serving four terms as MP. Dr Koh is married with two children and been a grassroots volunteer since 2002. He is currently also the Vice-Chair of the Citizen’s Consultative Committee in Yio Chu Kang.

And replacing MP Inderjit Singh, who announced his retirement on Facebook the same day the electoral boundaries review report was released last month, is MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC Gan Thiam Poh. Parts of Mr Gan's ward in Pasir-Ris Punggol was absorbed into Ang Mo Kio GRC after the boundaries were redrawn.

The remaining candidates for the Ang Mo Kio team include Prime Minister and anchor minister for Ang Mo Kio GRC Lee Hsien Loong, MP Ang Hin Kee and Dr Intan Azura Mokhtar.

HOUGANG SMC

Newcomer Lee Hong Chuang will contest the single-seat Hougang constituency in the upcoming election. He is a Senior IT manager at IBM and is also the chairman of the PAP branch in Hougang.

Speaking at the press conference held at the Punggol South PAP branch in Hougang, PM Lee noted that Mr Lee Hong Chuang's contest in Hougang will be a tough fight but he will have the party's full support.

SENGKANG WEST SMC

Incumbent MP for Sengkang West SMC Lam Pin Min will defend the Sengkang West constituency in the coming election.

This is the third of several planned PAP announcements of retiring and new faces. Earlier in the week, the PAP teams contesting in Bishan-Toa Payoh and Sembawang GRCs held their press conferences in a coffeeshop and a seniors’ home respectively.

PM Lee, who is also PAP's secretary-general, said it is good to remind ourselves what this election is about and what is at stake. Singaporeans are voting to choose the next government and the team to safeguard their future, he added.
