SINGAPORE — The 12th Parliament of Singapore has been dissolved today (Aug 25) and the Writ of Election has been issued by the President of Singapore.

Nomination Day will be on September 1 and Polling Day will be on Friday, September 11, which will be a public holiday.

The Singapore Government announcement, issued by President Tony Tan Keng Yam, was made on the Government Gazette this afternoon.

The appointed Returning Officer is Mr Ng Wai Choong, Chief Executive of the Energy Market Authority.

The campaigning period starts from Nomination Day, which counts as Day One of campaign period. There is a one day Cooling-Off day on the eve of Polling Day. This was instituted in during the 2011 GE to give voters time to reflect and make their decision before going to the polls.

There are 2,460,977 eligible voters for this General Election, which is an increase of 110,720 from the 2011 polls.

Candidates can collect nomination papers at the office of the Returning Officer at Elections Department or downloaded from the Elections Department website. The nomination papers must be delivered in duplicate to the Returning Officer at the respective Nomination Centre between 11am and 12pm on Nomination Day and the candidate (or group of candidates) must be accompanied by a proposer, a seconder and at least four assentors when delivering the nomination paper.

The 2015 electoral boundaries report was released last month on July 24. There will be 13 Single-Member Constituencies (SMCs), six 4-member Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs), eight 5-member GRCs and two 6-member GRCs for a total of 89 parliamentary seats up for grabs.
