SINGAPORE — Pasir Ris is now the third HDB town in Singapore, after Tampines and Sembawang, to have its very own network of intra-town dedicated cycling paths.

The completed cycling path network was launched today morning (Feb 15) by Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Teo Chee Hean, who is also MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC. It is part of the Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) plans to build intra-town cycling path networks in all HDB towns by 2030.

LTA’s new cycling paths add 9.3km to the existing network in the town, which had previously been built by the town council. This brings the total length of the cycling network to 13.3km.

Residents will now be able to cycle from their homes to places like Pasir Ris MRT Station and bus interchange, as well as White Sands shopping centre, along with other key amenities.

To improve pedestrian safety and create a more seamless cycling experience, bicycle crossings at two traffic light junctions have also been built at Pasir Ris Drive 3 and Drive 1, where cycling traffic to and from the town centre is heavier. These crossings run adjacent to the pedestrian crossings and allow cyclists to ride across roads separately from pedestrians without having to dismount.

With the completed network, cyclists will also be able to ride to adjacent towns like Tampines and Changi Village through the park connectors. LTA says the cycling networks will be integrated with the National Parks Board’s (NParks) Park Connector Networks, to form an island-wide off-road cycling path network spanning over 700 kilometres by 2030.

Works to build dedicated cycling paths are also currently underway in Yishun, with completion expected by the second quarter of this year (2015). Works will also start in Taman Jurong and Changi-Simei later this year, with the cycling path networks there expected to be completed by the end of the year (2015). CHANNEL NEWSASIA
