2 people injured after lorry goes against traffic at Loyang Ave

SINGAPORE — Two people were injured in a traffic accident when a driver drove his lorry against the flow of traffic at the junction of Loyang Avenue and Tampines Expressway on Thursday (April 20).

The police spokesman said that they were alerted to the accident at 10.08pm involving a lorry, a taxi and four cars.

A 55-year-old male car driver and his 43-year-old female passenger were injured and subsequently conveyed conscious to Changi General Hospital.

TODAY understands that the lorry driver claimed that the brakes of his vehicle malfunctioned, leading to the accident.

A dashcam footage of the incident posted on Facebook page ROADS.sg on Friday at 1.56pm shows the lorry making a right turn at a cross junction, driving head-on against the traffic in the process.

It appeared to scrape against at least three vehicles in the process, including a ComfortDelGro taxi, while narrowing avoiding a double-decker bus.

As of 7pm on Friday, the video has since been viewed over 13,000 times and shared more than 300 times.

Police investigations are ongoing.

A spate of cases of drivers going against the flow of traffic at the end of 2016 and early this year led the traffic police to reassure the public about the safety of Singapore's roads.

In a media briefing in January, the traffic police stressed that most of the cases of driving against the flow of traffic were accidental and unintentional.

From Dec 28, 2016 to Jan 11, there were eight of such cases. Between January and September last year, there were 118 cases of dangerous driving, including driving against traffic flow, down from 189 during the same period in 2015.
