SINGAPORE — It is important for schools to design and plan daily learning and groupings in racially-mixed teams, said Education Minister Heng Swee Keat.
Speaking at the launch of Pioneer Secondary School’s Racial Harmony Learning Carnival, Mr Heng said that this shared, common space must be nurtured to develop deep understanding of and respect for different cultures and traditions that are part of the national identity.
Pioneer Secondary School is one of the schools to have a programme within its curriculum to encourage students to learn and appreciate the cultures and traditions of others around them.
For two weeks, students in Secondary 1 and 2 undergo a five-part design thinking process, including tasks to help youths understand the Singapore identity through the older generation.
The carnival showcased what the students learned through games and exhibits.
On July 21 each year, schools in Singapore commemorate Racial Harmony Day to mark the anniversary of the 1964 racial riots. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
