SINGAPORE — Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong expressed his sadness at the passing of India’s 11th president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam in a Facebook post today (July 28).
“Dr Kalam had humble beginnings, but rose to become a top scientist at India’s defence research organisation. He then served as the country’s 11th President from 2002 to 2007, and was widely regarded as the “People’s President,” PM Lee wrote, adding that he was honoured to meet Dr Kalam when he visited Singapore in 2006.
“Our thoughts are with his family and the people of India during this time of sorrow,” wrote PM Lee.
Dr Kalam, who was India’s president from 2002 to 2007, died from cardiac arrest in a hospital in the northeastern Indian city of Shillong yesterday at the age of 83. He had collapsed earlier in the day while delivering a lecture, according to Indian media reports. ANJALI RAGURAMAN
