Police release photo of suspect in fatal hit-and-run accident; appeal for information

SINGAPORE – The police have released images of a man suspected to be involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident that happened last Thursday (Aug 17), and are appealing to the public to come forward if they have any information regarding the early morning incident.

SINGAPORE – The police have released images of a man suspected to be involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident that happened last Thursday (Aug 17), and are appealing to the public to come forward if they have any information regarding the early morning incident.

Images released alongside a statement by the police on Monday (Aug 21) show a stocky Chinese male, believed to be in his 40s or 50s. 

The police said that the individual is believed to be the owner of a Power-Assisted Bicycle (PAB) that hit a 78-year-old male pedestrian along Jalan Bukit Merah towards Queensway, outside McDonald’s at 6.34am.

The police added that the victim sustained serious head injuries as a result of the accident, while the suspect fled the scene.

TODAY understands the victim died from his injuries on Sunday.

Members of the public with any information related to the accident are requested to call the Police Hotline at 1800-255-0000 or submit the information via the I-Witness portal http://www.police.gov.sg/iwitness. 

Alternatively, a police report can be lodged at any Neighbourhood Police Centre or Neighbourhood Police Post. 

All information will be kept strictly confidential.

Anyone convicted of committing the offence of hit-and-run under Section 84 of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 276, will face a fine of up to S$3,000 and/or imprisonment for up to 12 months. 

In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, offenders may be fined up to S$5,000 and/or imprisoned for up to two years.
