SINGAPORE — Chairman of Popular Holdings Ramayah Vangatharaman died on Sunday (May 29) at age 66.
SINGAPORE — Chairman of Popular Holdings Ramayah Vangatharaman died on Sunday (May 29) at age 66.
He leaves behind his wife Renugadevi Kupppusamy.
In a statement released by Popular, the company said that Mr Vangatharaman was a voracious reader and advocate for the local literary circle, whose vision and commitment helped Popular Holdings champion the cause of providing recognition and support for local literary talents, such as with the annual Readers’ Choice Award.
His keen business acumen saw the company through the extension of Popular’s business into e-commerce, the statement said. His “foresight and wise leadership” also helped Popular overcome numerous challenges.
Mr Vangatharaman “instilled the same sense of pride he had for his work in the employees and challenged them to scale greater heights”, the company added.
Appointed as an independent director of Popular in 2002, Mr Vangatharaman assumed the position of non-executive chairman in 2012.
Mr Vangatharaman was also a Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators and sat on the panel of various arbitral institutions, such as the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, Singapore Institute of Arbitration, and the Asia-Pacific Regional Arbitration Grouping.
He was also a former member of the Law Reform Committee of the Singapore Academy of Law.
