LONDON — President Tony Tan Keng Yam received a full ceremonial welcome hosted by Queen Elizabeth II today (Oct 21), marking the start of his state visit to the United Kingdom. The state visit is the first for a Singapore head of state, and comes ahead of Singapore celebrating its Golden Jubilee next year.

President Tan and Mrs Mary Tan were first greeted by Prince William and his wife Kate at the Royal Garden Hotel. This is the Duchess’ first public appearance in more than two months — she has been suffering from acute morning sickness. The royal couple announced they were expecting their second child last month, and the baby is in April next year.

President Tan and Mrs Tan got a grand ceremonial welcome at Horse Guards Parade, where they were received by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. President Tan inspected the Guard of Honour, accompanied by the Duke, before heading to Buckingham Palace in a carriage procession.

At Buckingham Palace, the President was introduced by the Queen and the Duke to the members of their household. Later today, President Tan will visit Westminister Abbey, which will hold a memorial for the founder of modern Singapore, Sir Stamford Raffles.

President Tan will later address the UK Parliament, meet Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and be hosted to a state banquet by the Queen. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
