Rakuten Singapore to shut from Mar 1

SINGAPORE — Japanese e-commerce platform Rakuten will be shutting its Singapore marketplace from Mar 1, 2016, it said in a notice on its website yesterday (Feb 12).

SINGAPORE — Japanese e-commerce platform Rakuten will be shutting its Singapore marketplace from Mar 1, 2016, it said in a notice on its website yesterday (Feb 12).

"We regret to inform you that Rakuten Singapore marketplace will no longer be available to consumers for new purchases after Mar 1, 2016," it said. The company also thanked its customers for their support.

Rakuten will be closing its Malaysia and Indonesia marketplaces as well, according to reports by Tech In Asia and e27. About 150 staff members will be laid off, they reported.

In the statement, Rakuten also said its Singapore site will be fully operational for all shopping transactions until Feb 29, 2016.

"All orders with payment confirmed during this period will be fulfilled," the company said. Rakuten Singapore said customers will be able to shop on the platform until 11.59pm on Feb 29, while customers can access their purchase history until 11.59pm on Mar 31. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
